In this insightful interview, we sat down with Rudy Youssef, Application Engineer at Aibuild, to discuss his journey in engineering, his passion for 3D printing, and the future of additive manufacturing.

From Curiosity to Engineering

Rudy’s journey into engineering stemmed from an innate curiosity. He initially pursued mechanical engineering due to its interdisciplinary nature, integrating software, electrical, and mechanical aspects. While an internship at BMW in Germany introduced him to 3D printing, his career took off when he managed a university maker space, helping students use FDM and resin printers. Since then, 3D printing has been a pivotal part of his professional path.

Life at Aibuild

At Aibuild, Rudy’s role involves problem-solving for clients, experimenting with large-format 3D printing, and collaborating with various teams, including customer success, sales, and R&D. He thrives on Aibuild’s innovative environment, where visual programming enables complex toolpath generation without extensive coding.

Favourite Projects and Challenges

One of Rudy’s most memorable projects involved printing a highly complex chair with intricate overhangs and directional changes. The challenge required deep collaboration with the software team to push Aibuild’s software capabilities. Despite the trial-and-error process, the final product exceeded expectations, reinforcing the value of perseverance and teamwork.

"Large-scale and small-scale 3D printing don’t follow the same principles—adapting to new technologies is key."

Advancing AM at Aibuild

Aibuild is addressing key industry challenges with the development of Aihub, a closed-loop system designed to make AM a mature and reliable manufacturing solution. Aihub enables real-time adjustments during the printing process, improving part accuracy, reducing failures, and streamlining production. By integrating AI-driven monitoring and automation, this innovation is set to redefine how AM is utilized across industries.

"Mastering 3D printing isn’t just about the hardware—it’s about understanding the materials, software, and process as a whole."

Advice for Aspiring Engineers

For those entering the field, Rudy emphasizes continuous learning. Additive manufacturing is evolving rapidly, requiring adaptability and an open mind. He highlights the misconception that large-scale and small-scale printing follow the same principles, encouraging professionals to recalibrate their thinking as new technologies emerge.

The Future of Additive Manufacturing

Looking ahead, Rudy sees robotics playing a crucial role in advancing 3D printing, making it more accessible and efficient. AI’s involvement in optimizing generative designs and streamlining workflows will further revolutionize the industry. Additionally, advancements in multi-material printing and hybrid manufacturing techniques (combining additive and subtractive methods) are expanding the possibilities of what can be achieved with AM.

Sustainability is also becoming a major focus. With a push for more eco-friendly manufacturing, AM offers solutions such as material recycling, reduced waste, and decentralized production models that lower carbon footprints. Companies are now investing in biodegradable and bio-based polymers, as well as energy-efficient printing processes, to further minimize environmental impact.
